Project "Unknown World"

The expedition started on the 1st of June 2003 from Saint-Petersburg, Russia

The official purposes of the project are to:

1. Represent Saint-Petersburg and Russia through lectures and photo exhibitions at schools, universities and cultural centers. Promotion of ideas of peace, tolerance and friendly relations among nations. Establish new connections between youth organizations in Russia and abroad.

2. Explore remote and beautiful landscapes, historical and ethnographical studies of less known nations and cultures. Collect information for journal publications.

But frankly speaking we just love to travel...

About the Project

Our reason for traveling is to understand the world better. This project has been undertaken with our own independent funds and goals. We hope that in the near future we will be able to continue the journey that we have begun by completing our trip around the world. Since we have chosen not to take the most direct route around the world, we have conscientiously explored some infrequently traveled places. Our traveling does not depend on a strict itinerary, nor do we normally rely on paid-transport but instead we prefer walking, cycling, hitch-hiking, and other free forms of transport. Besides exploration for our own self-enrichment, we see ourselves as examples to others who crave to see the world. Our experiences prove that lack of money is not such a big obstacle after all; what one really needs is the will to go and enthusiasm for exploring the unknown.

The route of the expedition includes:

Part 1: Russia - Georgia - Armenia - Turkey - Iraq - Iran - Pakistan - India - Sri-Lanka - Nepal - Bangladesh - China - Thailand

Part 2: Mexico - Belize - Guatemala - Salvador - Honduras - Nicaragua - Costa Rica - Panama - Colombia - Ecuador - Peru - Bolivia - Chile - Antarctic - Argentina - Paraguay - Uruguay - Brazil - Venezuela - Cuba

Part 3 (on bycicle): Tibet (China) - Nepal - India

Participants of the project have already traveled by walking, cycling and hitch-hiking through:

Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bangladesh, Belize, Bhutan, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa-Rica, Cuba, Croatia, Czech Republic, East Timor, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, Salvador, Singapore, Slovakia, Sri-Lanka, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yugoslavia.
